تلخیص
Objective: To determine frequency of various etiologic factors among non-traumatic comatose children presenting in medical emergency in Children Hospital, Lahore Study Design: Descriptive cross-sectional study. Site and Duration of Study: Department of Pediatrics Emergency, The Children’s Hospital and Institute of Child Health, Lahore, from May 2013 to November 2013. Methodology: This study included 270 children with coma. Certain laboratory investigations including complete blood count, electrolytes, blood sugar, urine and stool complete analysis, chest X-rays and bacterial blood culture, cerebral-spinal fluid (CSF) microscopy and bacterial culture, microscopy test for malaria, Monteux test, tuberculosis culture, brain imaging studies and Electro encephalogram (EEG) were used to determine cause of coma (including infection, epilepsy, metabolic, intoxication, tumor and congenital malformation). Results: Infection was present in 133 (49.3%) patients, epilepsy in 65 (24.1%) patients, metabolic disorders in 42 (15.5%) patients, intoxication in 22 (8.1%), tumor in 3 (1.1%) patients and congenital disorder in 5 (1.9%) patients. Conclusion: Infection was the most common cause of coma followed by epilepsy and metabolic. Intoxication, tumor and congenital disorder were also other causes need to be ruled out.
