Background: After producing significant outcomes in adult stroke
Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) with its variety of
treatment protocols has acquired popularity in improving functional
outcomes in children with hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy.
Purpose of study: The purpose of study was to determine the effects of
constraint induced movement therapy in conjunction with conventional
therapy as compared to conventional therapy alone; in improving
functional abilities of children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy.
Methodology: 18 children with hemiplegic CP were recruited. The age
of children age ranged from 2 to 12 years. 9 Children were placed in
the treatment group after random allocation through tossing the coin.
They received CIMT therapy for 2 hours per day for 14 consecutive days
combined with conventional therapy. Whereas the control group was
given conventional therapy only for 40-45 minutes daily, it included
stretching weight bearing and functional occupational therapy.
Results: Participant that received CIMT showed significant improvement
on quality of movement How Well scale of Pediatric Motor Activity Log
after treatment P value (0.036), however comparison of Pre and Post
How Often scale P- value of (0.06) shows it’s insignificant, but a
considerable trend towards significance. On the other hand, in the
conventional group the P value of pre& post How Well scale was (0.06)
which was also considered to be insignificant.
Conclusions: It is concluded that Constraint induced movement
therapy with conventional therapy is better for improving functional
abilities in children with hemiplegic CP as compared to children who
received conventional therapy only.
