Background: The umbilical cord is a significant site for bacterial
colonization and the commonest route for tetanus neonatorum. It was
found that alcohol enhances cord separation and mothers found a lot of
difficulties in keeping the cord clean with dry cord care method.
Objective: To compare the mean umbilical cord separation time among
newborns cured with Alcohol versus dry cord care.
Methods: A randomized control trial was conducted following systematic
sampling at National Institute of Child Health from Well Baby Clinicin all
full term infants with normal spontaneous vaginal delivery who visited
outpatient well baby clinic of National Institute of child health for routine
well baby examination with in the first 24hrs of their lives. After informed
consent mothers were educated about cleaning the umbilical cords
according to the regimen group (alcohol care group A) or (dry cord
care group B). Parents were advised by the attending doctor to note the
date and time of detachment of the cord and to bring the child to the
well-baby clinic on the very next day of the cord separation or in case if
they notice any sign of sepsis or inflammation of the cord. The data was
analyzed using SPSS version 13.
Results: This study enrolled total 70 neonates. Cord separation in alcohol
group was 7.03±1.2 days and in dry group 9.29±1 day and is statistically
significant; p-<0.001.Out of them 39 (55.7%) were male with male to
female ratio 1.2:1.
Overall 11(15.7%) had complications and of them noted, redness around
umbilicus (8.6% in each group), discharge (2.9% and 5.7% in alcohol and
dry group respectively) and fever (2.9% in both groups).
Conclusions: It is concluded from this study that the alcohol cord care
resulted in earlier cord separation compared to dry care.
