Methodology: The study was carried out from November 2013 to April 2014. It was a crossectional analytical study. 384 patients were enrolled and data was collected on a pre structured proforma. Data was analyzed by using SPSS version 19. Results: 384 mother and child pairs were interviewed. 53.1 % were male babies and 46.9 % were female babies.38.3% mothers did exclusive breast feeding for the first six months of life. 90.9% mothers had a positive attitude towards breast feeding. Family members were the source of maternal knowledge in majority of the cases. Mode of delivery, parity, maternal employment and counselling were the significant factors influencing the feeding method employed by the mother. Conclusions: The rate of exclusive breast feeding is still low in Pakistan. Local beliefs, customs and family influences should be incorporated in the community health programmes for the protection and promotion of exclusive breast feeding.
