Objective: To determine the frequency of (UTI) Urinary tract infections in asymptomatic jaundiced babies in neonatal age group. Study Design: Cross sectional survey. Place and Duration of Study: Pediatric Department of Jinnah Hospital Lahore from 5th July 2010 to 4th January 2010. Methodology: One hundred and fifty neonates in the age range of 15- 28 days, meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were registered from pediatric outpatient department and nursery emergency of Jinnah Hospital Lahore. Informed consent was taken from their parents to include them in study. Demographic information (name, age, sex, address) was collected. The observed data was recorded on a specially designed Performa (attached). Results: The mean age of the patients was 22± 4.08days. There were 68(45.3%) patients in the age range of 14-21 days and 82 (54.7%) patients in the age range of 22-28 days. There were 93 (62%) male patients and 57 (38%) female patients. UTI was found in 11 (7.3%) cases diagnosed with positive urine cultures of catheterized urine specimens and it was absent in 139 cases. Out of 11 cases of UTI 7 (63.6%) cases were male and 4 (36.4%) cases were female. In the age range of 14-22 days 6(54.5%) patients suffered from UTI. In the range of 22-28 days 5 (45.5%) patients had UTI. Conclusion: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common infection in infants and children. As a young infant, boys are more commonly affected than girls. Presentation varies among different age groups. Clinical features in neonates and young infants are non-specific and may manifest as septicaemia, vomiting or jaundice etc. where a high index of suspicion is needed.
