Objective: This study was conducted to identify the etiology, outcome
and management of Facial palsy in pediatric age group.
Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of 42 patients less than 14 years
of age who were diagnosed with facial nerve palsy (Bell's palsy) from
September 2009 to May 2014.
Results: A total of 42 patients (30 female, 12 male) with a mean age of 9
years were included. Causes of facial palsy were idiopathic facial palsy
(Bell's palsy) 32 (76%), Otitis media (16.6%), and congenital 2 (4.7%) of the
cases. One patient (2.3%) had recurrent attacks. Right/left ratios and
male/female ratios were 20/22 and 30/12, respectively. 18 (42.8%) of
these cases gave history of previous infections.
Conclusions: In our observation, idiopathic cause was the most
frequent reasonfor facial palsy followed by infectious causes. A large
number of conditions may present with facial nerve palsy (FNP) of lower
motor neuron type in children. That is why a proper exploration of
underlying cause is required.
