Objectives: To screen close family members of Thalassemia children for the presence of Thalassemia trait; To do genetics counseling of carriers and at risk couples in families of thalassemic children for reducing the burden of thalassemia in Multan region. Study Design: A cross sectional Descriptive study. Place And Duration Of Study: Thalassemia centre, children hospital and Institute of child health Multan from Jan 2013 to June 2014. Material and Methods: Total ten Thalassemia patients’ families were selected for the study. A meeting was held with parents of 10 Thalassemia children receiving blood transfusion at Thalassemia centre CHC Multan. A total of 100 cases was screened for the presence of Thalassemia. Screening was carried out in a step wise approach. Red cell indices (Hb, MCV, MCH), serum ferritin and Hb –electrophoresis were measured. First of all Red cell indices were measured by electronic counter. When red cell indices showed microcytosis MCV <25 pg or MCV 75 fl, serum ferritin levels were measured to rule out iron deficiency anemia. Cases that showed microcytosis with normal serum ferritin level, Hb electrophoresis were sent. When Hb –electrophoresis showed HbA2 level 3.5% or more cases were labeled as Thalassemia. After completing all lab work a counseling session was held with screened carriers and their parents. Durning the counseling session, the results of screening were given to carriers themselves or parents of children less than 15 years. Results: In this study the total sample size was 100, out of which 59 (59%) were females and 41(41%) were females. Mean age of sample was 15 years +/_ 5 years. Mean hemoglobin of sample was 12.3 +/_ 1.37.Out of 100 cases 37 (37%) were detected of having Thalassemia trait on Hb – electrophoresis while 77(77%) had normal Hb –electrophoresis.
