Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study is to review the clinical presentations
and outcome of Moyamoya disease in children.
Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective record review study of 11
patients who presented with Moyamoya disease to tertiary care hospitals
in Saudi Arabia. Our case series describes the clinical presentation and
outcome of 11 children diagnosed with Moyamoya disease.
Result: A total of 11 patients diagnosed with Moyamoya disease from
2005 to 2014 included in this study. Six were male (54.54%) and 5 were
female (45.45%) with age range from 11 months to 11 years. Diagnosis
was made on clinical bases and confirmed with MRA/MRI CT
angiography. Conservative treatment in most of the cases offered and
CNS infection was treated accordingly to the hospital protocol. Four of
them were operated in neurosurgery for revascularization, which include,
Down syndrome with hemi paresis unable to walk and speak, two with
sickle cell anemia and one infant who presented with encephalitis.
All patients discharged after stabilization with follow up appointment in
outpatient department.
Conclusion: The authors' cases demonstrate clinical presentation,
outcome and diagnosis of Moyamoya disease in the pediatric
population
